Profile

Located in Eastern Tennessee, Eye Centers of Tennessee (ECOTN) has been in business for more than 30 years. Seeing patients across four locations, ECOTN requires a reliable EMR solution that provides efficient workflows and clinical content. Having first moved to an EMR solution from paper more than six years ago, it was apparent that the previous solution was no longer able to meet the needs of the growing practice group. Expectations on feature development and support were not being met, and the practice decided to evaluate a replacement solution. As well as looking for a modern EMR solution with efficient charting features, ECOTN needed a smooth transition in choosing a replacement.

Selecting a new EMR

The owner of ECOTN, Dr. Larry Patterson, was determined to evaluate a solution based on feature functionality and the ability of the solution provider to be a partner throughout the complete process of selection, implementation and beyond. “Paying and continue to pay for something that does not bring value to a practice is not pleasant. We decided there was no fi nancial benefi t to maintaining the status quo,” said Dr. Patterson. “We had a horrible transition from paper to our previous EMR solution, and the gradual deterioration of that solution and support meant we were fully engaged in the selection of our replacement solution.”

Dr. Patterson and his clinical team embarked on a series of demos and site visits to review alternative solutions and quickly decided that Nextech’s IntelleChartPRO was the solution they could see growing with their practice. “Our old system was all about the
PC. Patient encounters were less about interacting with people and more about being buried in a PC screen updating data. IntelleChartPRO allows for a superior encounter and a much better clinical experience for both the doctor and the patient.”

The Switch

“There was a sense of trepidation in moving to IntelleChartPRO, memories of the miserable switch from paper to our previous EMR were still fresh. Nextech helped us prepare for the change by providing tools and personnel to have staff members familiar with the solution,” said Sheena Lee, COA, OSC of ECOTN. Dr. Patterson continues, “It doesn’t matter if you bought a system one year ago or fi ve years ago, the money you spent is gone. It was hard for us: the realization we paid for that system that we just didn’t like using. But it doesn’t help your cause as a doctor to say we already spent all this money on the system so let’s suff er for the next fi ve years and then we’ll consider changing. As soon as you had the system long enough where all your patients are in the system and you’re still struggling, there is no fi nancial advantage to be gained with that product. In the end you just have to switch.” Webinars and hosted sessions were provided and a dedicated trainer was assigned to ECOTN during the go-live period.
