Nextech Chief Medical Officer to Discuss Responsible Use of AI at Eyecelerator Blog Feature

The allure of artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly spread throughout the healthcare industry. This powerful tool carries great promise — but how can specialty practices wield it responsibly?

Nextech Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jason Handza will present on the responsible use of AI in improving clinical and patient outcomes at Eyecelerator, a conference about trends and innovations in eye care held Oct. 17 in Chicago. Handza’s presentation is at 2:03 p.m. in Room 451B of McCormick Place.

Handza is a practicing physician with 20 years of experience in ophthalmology. His expertise helps strategically guide excellence in product design and development of the Nextech technology platform to drive better practice and patient outcomes. He has called for urgency in meaningful discussions on ethical AI use and strategic implementation within healthcare.

“As we’re still in the early stages with AI, these conversations must commence promptly. In healthcare, change – even under the guise of technological progress – waits for no one,” Handza said in a report by Healthcare IT Today earlier this year.

In the Eyecelerator presentation, Handza will discuss ethical AI use and Nextech’s strategy for responsible implementation within our software. Nextech’s AI technology development is geared toward restoring compassion to the forefront of care, to help providers deliver more empathetic encounters, make better decisions, and optimize patient engagement and staff workflow.

Handza will also discuss Nextech’s AI Scribe, an AI-powered, provider-managed ambient listening technology currently being piloted. The tool improves documentation and reduces manual data entry, helping providers see more patients per day.

Dr. Neel Vaidya from Chicago Cornea Consultants has been testing AI Scribe at his practice and believes it shows promise in time-saving capabilities.

“It’s a huge time-saver for my technicians to have discrete elements like the patient’s vision, intraocular pressure, and refraction, all go into the chart correctly so they can save clicks," Vaidya said.

The day after Eyecelerator, Nextech will be exhibiting at the AAO 2024 conference from Oct. 18-21. Stop by Booth 2308 to learn more about Nextech or visit www.nextech.com.

Did You Know?

How does AI work in healthcare?

Artificial intelligence is technology with access to large amounts of information, which it can then synthesize and use to be trained to resolve issues, make recommendations, and spot patterns. In healthcare, it can support staff in many ways, such as removing repetitive tasks that slow down the workday and providing resources that lead to faster, more informed decisions with earlier treatment plans for patients.

How is Nextech incorporating AI into its solution?

Nextech’s strategy involves collaboration with established industry authorities plus our own internal expertise and years of experience as an innovator in specialty healthcare technology to develop ethical and responsible AI. These enhancements in our products will increase operational efficiencies to help providers feel rejuvenated, reduce personal sacrifices, and have more time to deliver even greater care to their patients.
